The Languages of Magic
All magic started out good intentioned, therefore speaking it backwards for the opposite effect came after.
A spell when spoken backwards produces the opposite effect, but to counter a spell a different spell must be used: i.e. to quench fire, a Water Spout must be used, and not simply a fire spell spoken backwards. Note that the written form, the Tengwar of the Magi, is completely phonetic and thus reversible.
